In recent years a new area of research has developed at the meeting point of information technologies and bio-technologies. This new field will quickly create thousands of new products and services and may change the human way of life. The lecture presents many examples to illustrate fascinating new research in bionics or info-bionics. One of these, the Bi-i, developed by Hungarian researchers is the fastest camera-computer in the world. The practical applications of bionics are boundless. The lecture outlines the most important possible applications from autonomous artificial perceptive, calculating and intervention tools and interfaces built into living organisms, to prostheses replacing necrotized tissues or medicament feeders, all of which pave the way for artificial--living symbioses. A minimal capability of vision has already been restored to a few blind patients and some encouraging results have been achieved in the restoration of the partial movement of paralysed limbs. Undoubtedly, the most complex task is the establishment of direct contact with the brain, this, of course, not only holds opportunities but carries enormous risks and great bio-ethic responsibility.
Mi található a Föld felszínének valamelyik pontjában?
The earliest written document on the theoretical shape of the Earth comes from Homer where the Earth was viewed as a flat disc surrounded by oceans. A few centuries later the Greeks viewed it as a sphere, which was supported by various observations and even the radius of a spherical Earth was calculated. The discoveries of the great astronomers of the 16th and 17th century showed that the shape of the Earth could not be a sphere. Based on their calculations they viewed it as a rotation ellipsoid. By the second half of the 19th century we came to understand that the rotation ellipsoid as a theoretical earth shape is not sustainable in all cases. Today we acquire more precise information on the geoids with the help of satellites, especially with those serving navigational purposes. With the help of remote sensors we can learn about the surface of the earth without actually having to come into contact with it. The lecture reviews in detail the traditional and modern techniques used to explore the surface of the earth, particularly that of remote sensors. Through examples it demonstrates how much of our information on the Earth was obtained and reveals the opportunities that lie ahead.

The long course of globalisation, commencing with the Hanseatic League has seen rapid acceleration since the 1980's. World trade and foreign capital investment has grown exponentially and there has been a profound change in the international distribution of labour. The role of multinational companies and the sheer number of speculative financial transactions has increased dramatically. Even so, free market capitalism and parliamentary democracy has not become as absolute as neo-liberal economics has. In the eighties Reagan and Thatcher applied the principles of market fundamentalism and IMF and World Bank followed suit. Supporters of globalisation say that everybody is a winner; its critics believe that it leads to chaos and polarisation. Evidence suggests that both consequences co-exist simultaneously. The difference between the richest and the poorest countries has grown to 1:40 - however, many countries are left behind because they are excluded from globalisation. In Central and East-Europe, as the example of Southern Europe shows, many countries have the opportunity to catch up.
