The first part of the lecture overviews the amazing pace of development, which has led to computers working everywhere around us. In just fifty years computers have come to be central to a huge range of tasks. The most important issues of computer development are speed, memory capacity and error-proof operation which all point in the direction of miniaturisation. This tendency will reach its peak in about 15 to 20 years time. The next phase of development will most probably be marked by quantum computers operating on entirely new principles. The rapid merging of information technology, telecommunications and electronic media is organising us all into worldwide networks. We live in a digital world: humans, computers, robots and automatons communicate digitally in an 'inter-woven' world. A new information society is taking shape based on a new technology in a global world. Time is shorter, the pace quicker. Our culture, our public life - all that forms the historical basis of our personality is changing and the mental and physical threshold of tolerance of man, community, and society is yet to be fully understood.
Man has always been hungry for information. As a thinking, intelligent being, he creates various devices to complement his own deficient abilities. The tools for gathering, storing and sharing information and the tools for communication with others have seen tremendous development and many different devices and methods have been invented to satisfy our hunger for information. One of the most interesting tools is the computer, a device helping us to think. Computers need information to be able to work. The most efficient communication tool of computers is the computer network. Computer networks establish connections among computers and allow them to exchange information and share their resources, leading to a multiplication of the computers' capacities. Computer networks allow us to solve problems that would otherwise be impossible with single machines. The lecture introduces the Internet; it covers the foundations and potential of its functionality, stressing that it is merely a tool to facilitate our work and to enhance our understanding of the world around us.

One of the central questions of biology is its evolutionary origin. This lecture briefly overviews the history of the development of the human species and the evolutionary and genetic links with our closest relatives. It goes on to analyse the three components of the human behavioral complex unique to our race: behavioral patterns related to group life, adaptation to group activities and constructive activities. We come to understand that the constructive ability is a biological quality particular to humans, which manifests itself not only in speech, in creating objects or in abstract thinking but also in the development of social structures. The structure of human groups, norms and rules governing the life of groups are all derived from the human constructive ability. The most important element, in contrast to animals, is man's readiness to act in the interest of the group regardless of the negative impact on his own individual and genetic interests. In other words, he is able to subordinate his own interests to those of the group.
