The wish to understand the process of ageing is as old as mankind itself but scientific research into ageing started only a few decades ago. Gerontology is a multi-disciplinary science, the purpose of which is to learn about ageing and to guarantee the best possible quality and longest possible duration of life. Although there is still no definite answer to the question of why we grow old, the most plausible is that it cannot be associated with an actual process. There are new problems concerning ageing: life expectancy has doubled in developed countries over the past hundred years, but this only means the number of years one can expect to live, and not the quality of life during these years. The other major problem is the dramatic increase in the number of elderly people: who will support these people if they can no longer work and what kind of life can they expect? A continuous increase in the number of elderly people can be seen in all developed countries, and the life expectancy of men is shorter than that of women everywhere. Caring for an increasing number of elderly people is a problem not properly solved anywhere - different cultures are searching for an answer to this issue within the social network or through technology. People living today will probably live a longer and better quality life than ever, especially if technological development continues at the current rate.
On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the birth of Bálint Balassi, the lecture deals with the poet's plan of a secret renaissance as reconstructed in an e-book edition today. In 1964 the literary critic, Rabán Gerézdi, expressed the hypothesis that the 'Balassa Codex' manuscript including Balassi's poems bears the traces of conscious editing, and that Balassi actually planned three cycles composed of 33 poems. It was assumed, that all distortions were caused by the supposed 'primary copier' who copied Balassi's poems in his book in 1589-1590, but did not understand the composition of the volume and corrupted it in the best places. In the 1990s it was discovered that no text distorting 'primary copier' existed. The artistic structure of the poems, preserved in the 'Balassa Codex', were, so to speak, spoiled by Balassi himself. The basic structure of the volume is defined by the poet's lyric autobiography. In this we find interpolated a sub-series of religious poems and one casting a dubious light on his love. The new reconstruction of the volume of poems is included in the critical edition of Balassi's works published on the Internet. The combinatorial possibilities of the e-book were inspired by renaissance and baroque bibliographical works of art.

A 20. század, s elsősorban annak második fele igen jelentős fejlődést tudott felmutatni az emlődaganat kezelésében. Az előadás bemutatja, hogy milyen utat járt be az emlőbetegségek - elsősorban a rosszindulatú daganatok - kezelése, hol tartunk jelenleg, mit tudunk tenni embertársaink egészségének visszaadásáért, életének biztosításáért. Megismertet az emlődaganatok keletkezésének és kórismézésének néhány kérdésével, különösen tekintettel a remélhetőleg mindinkább elterjedő szűrővizsgálatokra.
The lecture presents how the treatment of breast diseases, primarily malignant tumours, developed, where we stand now and what physicians can do to ensure the survival of sufferers. The introduction clarifies the notion of tumour and the difference between malignant and non-malignant tumours, then goes on to describe the diagnostic and treatment possibilities of breast tumours. Perhaps the most important message of the lecture is that self-examination, regular medical checks and mammograms play a vital role in early diagnosis. In essence there are three treatment options for breast tumours: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Nowadays, less radical surgical interventions than surgery are preferred, considerably decreasing the burden breast cancer puts on patients, without lessening therapeutic effectiveness. This of course, requires a better understanding of the biological behavior of tumours and the development of radio- and pharmacotherapy.
