For an hour, present and future met at the House of Future Teatrum for the 150th Encompass lecture held on December 18. As part of the series, major researchers and scholars with an outstanding teaching history have shared the beauty and intricacies of their field of research, but this evening was an exception to the rule, as it was the turn of young scientists at the start of their research careers to step onto the podium. Encompass, in conjunction with the Hungarian Research Student Movement, ran a competition in which three high-school students won through to present their results at this anniversary event. András Gilyén, who matriculates next year and won the European Patent Office prize for originality at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, introduces the compass software he has developed for download to mobile phones.

One of the defining figures of Hungarian sociology explores how the principle of equal-opportunities has been satisfied in recent decades, or rather, whether it has been satisfied at all. A common social theme often discussed is that of the limits to social mobility. This lecture analyses possibilities for mobility in light of sociological research, with added emphasis on the role of education. It constructs a model of the individual's possible movements within society and discusses in depth those skills, social privileges and opportunities that are often exaggerated to the extreme, but in reality form part of a highly complex system.

In order to replace oil- and coal-based energy production, the developed world is seeking solutions in many branches of science. The reason fusion-based atomic energy offers an attractive alternative is because it dismantles the most important argument brought against atomic energy in that it does not produce radioactive waste. In fusion technology, the use of plasma containing electrically charged particles “steals” the sun’s energy and brings it to earth. Today, this procedure makes production of fusion energy a reality that is closer than you might think. Lecturer Sándor Zoletnik is a contributor to ITER, the European nuclear fusion reactor development programme.
