A cukorbaj a lakosság közel 5%-át érintő idült jellegű megbetegedés. Középpontjában a szénhidrát-anyagcsere zavara, a kórosan magas vércukorérték áll. A 21. század egyik igazi egészségügyi gondját az elhízáshoz társuló cukorbetegség világméretű terjedése jelenti. A cukorbetegség kezelési lehetőségei terén az inzulin felfedezése fordulatot hozott, napjainkban a terápiás fegyvertár egyre bővül. A cukorbetegség kezelésével a vércukorértékek normalizálása, s a jellegzetes szemészeti, vese- és idegrendszeri, illetve az érelmeszesedésből adódó szövődmények kockázatcsökkentése is elérhető.
Diabetes is a problem not just for the person affected, but is also a burden also for the healthcare provider network, and ultimately for the whole society. The number of diabetic patients and the relative incidence of diabetes are currently at a high level. In Hungary only estimated figures are available, but according to widely accepted data it is known that 5-6% of the Hungarian population suffer from diabetes. During the chronic disease-process of diabetes, certain small vessel and large vessel complications may develop, which can significantly impair the quality of health of the patients, as a consequence of possible vision impair, kidney function disorder, nervous system complications, or clinical symptoms originating from atherosclerosis (myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral artery diseases). The 85-year-long clinical application of insulin for the treatment of diabetes has brought about enormous developments. The first variation of alternative methods to administer insulin, the so-called inhalation insulin will soon be an available method of treatment in Hungary, too.
In the early years of the new millennium market economy conditions have brought new challenges for modern democracies around the world, prompting them to implement reforms. There is a double pressure on states. On the one hand, they have to meet the requirements of the global economy in terms of competitiveness. On the other hand, they have to maintain social stability and cohesion, prevent the negative consequences of the ever-growing income disparities, and find a way to decrease the already dangerous level of inequality of opportunity. The falling active population, the boom in costs due to the emergence of new technologies, and the conflict between globalisation and the interests of nation states - these are the major problems blocking the way towards a solution. Whether a state sets growth or equilibrium, employment or inflation as an objective in its economic policy is no longer a matter of free choice. Efforts to speed up growth are constrained by weakening equilibrium, while actions to increase the level of employment are limited by rising inflation. The re-structuring of the tax and pension systems as well as the reform of social policy cannot be deferred any longer.

A Világmindenség sugárzó - számunkra közvetlenül megfigyelhető - anyagának legnagyobb része csillagok formáját ölti. Ezek túlnyomó többsége a legjobb teleszkópokban is csak halovány fénypont. Egyiküket, a Napot, szinte karnyújtásnyi közelségből, premier plánban tanulmányozhatjuk.
The largest part of the radiating - and therefore, for us, directly observable - matter in the Universe takes the form of stars. Even when using the best telescopes, the majority of these stars appear only as dim spots of light. Therefore, we are very fortunate to have a star almost within arm's reach for us to study: the Sun. The Sun allows us to observe the processes that also take place on much more distant celestial bodies. As such, the Sun opens a gate to the human intellect: on the one hand, toward distant places and different aeons, and on the other hand, toward a better understanding of the principles of physics that can also be put to use on Earth. The aim of this lecture is to introduce the immense diversity of the forms of behavior that the magnetised plasma constituting the Sun - and at the same time the majority of the visible Universe - can take.
