The revolution of genetics has led to a transformation in the research into the history of our race. In addition to the examination of blood groups, enzymes and antigens, today certain DNA sections are used to establish the differences or similarities between various populations. Of the wide range of genetic methods, the lecture places emphasis on the analysis of DNA of the so-called mitochondria, the cell particle solely inheritable from the mother as it functions as reliable molecular evolutionary clock. For example, based on the examination of a characteristic section of mitochondrial DNA, all living women can be traced back to a single origin. This source is the mitochondrial 'Eve', who lived in Africa some 150,000-200,000 years ago. By tracing the inheritance of the Y-chromosomes heritable from the father, the paternal inheritance line of populations can also be traced back to one African 'Adam'. The principal message of the lecture is that genetic research brings to an end racist genetic theories. The data of the Human Genome Programme clearly support the conclusion of past research that people cannot be divided into races on genetic grounds.
A virágokban lejátszódó intim események molekuláris hátterének megismerése fontos gyakorlati jelentőséggel bír, hiszen a növénynemesítés a géntechnológiai és genomikai módszerek révén újabb lehetőségekhez jutott a virágzási idő befolyásolására, új növényszaporítási eljárások kidolgozására, a betakarított termés minőségének, táplálkozási értékének javítására.
Flowers do not merely possess an aesthetic value; the seeds born by the pollination of the stigma concealed within them serve species preservation and thus are indispensable sources of human alimentation. Research into molecular, cell and development biology over the years has revealed some of the mysteries of the plant life cycle. With the sequencing of plant DNA stock, gene technology interventions have become more precise. Building isolated genes into the genome of plants makes it possible to suspend gene functions, and the over-production of proteins, i.e. to create trans-genic plants. The first part of the lecture overviews the molecular processes responsible for flowering, pollination and seed development. With knowledge of these processes, describing and isolating the genes and controlling them can greatly aid the plant cultivator and breeder in the safe production of crops. Next, we are provided with convincing examples of the many ways in which the processes in the sexual organs of plants can affect our daily lives and the lecturer draws a most important conclusion - the primary task of plant breeding is to improve our plants to ensure healthier food and encourage environmentally conscious agricultural practice. Newly acquired knowledge aims to improve our quality of life and it is hoped that humankind will fully exploit this opportunity.

Do individual nations have a character and how is it possible to describe this character scientifically? Are the stereotypes we formulate about other nations important in our lives? Is there truth in such stereotypes and when must we talk of prejudices instead? In the 19th century 'nation characterology', the study of the characteristics of various nations, was born. This was replaced at the beginning of the 20th century by a sub-discipline: scientific stereotype research. A stereotype is a belief or expectation related to a group, which anticipates and practically frames personal experiences with members of those groups. Accordingly, not the national characteristics but perceptions of them are to be researched. The frequent and unavoidable use of stereotypes is generally related to the psychological mechanisms of human cognition. Some argue that it is questionable whether we can talk of nations at all; according to sceptics national cohesion exists merely on a subjective level. If indeed nations do exist and if they differ from each other, what are the scientific methods to be used to measure these differences? Cultural comparative psychology tries to answer this question by searching for systematic differences in the psychological characteristics of people and groups living in different cultures.
