Az előadás természettudomány-történeti: a 20. századi nagy magyar tudósokról szól. Olyanokról, mint Hevesy György, Polányi Mihály, Szent-Györgyi Albert vagy Kármán Tódor, Teller Ede, Neumann János. Nobel-díjasokról és majdnem Nobel-díjasokról. Azt próbálja végiggondolni, magyarországi születésük hozzájárulhatott-e ahhoz, hogy egyesek külföldön olyan kiváló tudósnak bizonyultak. Egyáltalán: miben állhat egy ilyen hozzájárulás?
The lecture traces the legend of the Hungarian scientific genius: the 20th century natural scientists who achieved real major success and recognition, mainly abroad, and who are collectively known in the history of science as the 'Hungarian phenomenon'. What are the common characteristics that marked the members of the group? A theoretical disposition, outstanding mathematical skill, practical-engineering interest, attraction to new scientific fields, competitiveness, many-sidedness, problem-solving abilities, a bent for philosophy, and a commitment to and participation in anti-totalitarian politics. The factors that contributed to the success of the theoretically and practically-minded Hungarian scientists were an increase in the importance of physics requiring abstract mathematical knowledge and closer links between modern science and practice. Finally, migration played a decisive role. Anyone who was ready or was forced to step out onto the international stage, faced challenges that he could not find here at home. Migration brought the talent into contact with the necessary financial, human and institutional conditions.
Health is more than the absence of illness. It is a physical and psychological balance with the external and internal environment. Maintaining health is only possible with active and health conscious behavior. A passive life style and the abuse of substances considerably decrease life expectancy. Maintaining health requires constant attention, work and learning. A health conscious life has to be started in the early years. Most chronic diseases develop early. The socialisation and behavioral patterns of childhood and puberty define the health of a person in the long run. The basis for a healthy life is appropriate nutrition and physical exercise. Excessive consumption of substances severely burdens the organism. Legal drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol are particularly harmful. Smoking causes perhaps the most damages in the human organism, it is the starting point of a number of respiratory and circulatory diseases. A healthy life style can be achieved in many ways. Conscious nutritional choices, regular exercise and moderate consumption are needed. At best, these guidelines are not lived as restrictions but become a part of one's life style ensuring a long and good quality life.

The exploitation of mineral substances and rocks is almost as old as conscious human activity. While satisfying basic human needs, mining also has economic, social and sometimes political importance. The lecture describes the history of mining and follows its development up to modern times with particular attention paid to mineral mining in the Carpathian Basin and the current mineral resources of Hungary. An important part of the lecture presents trends in worldwide mineral extraction. The political changes of recent decades, the opening up of the world economy and distribution have greatly changed the production scale of mining products. Some countries have maintained their traditional market position, however, Western European countries which previously played a decisive role have lost out as a result of this process while developing countries outside Europe have profited. The lecture raises the current issues related to finding a desirable balance between mining and the protection and restoration of the environment, with special regard to the greenhouse effect and its relation to fuel consumption.
