Does the punishment of those committing a crime and the application of the law in general serve rationality or emotion? Is the application of punishment itself based on reason? Punishment serves two purposes, vengeance and deterrence. The latter makes the crime more costly to the potential offender, in the sense that it makes the crime less worth committing. Therefore, punishment as the cost of crime is rational inasmuch as it influences the behavior of rational people. If the perpetrator does not recognise the punishment for his criminal actions, criminal law may not be justified as a rational system. The penal system can influence the decisions of rational people by increasing the likelihood of punishment, and by increasing its severity. Both are expensive, their combination is reasonable if they can prevent damages greater than the costs attached to them.
It was not until the 20th century that the structure of the atoms discovered, moreover, experiments led to the discovery of yet more particles. Atomic physics was followed by nuclear physics that in turn lead to elementary particle physics. The substance of the Universe is built of atoms, which are made up of electrons and nuclei. The nuclei are made of protons and neutrons whose particles are made of three, so-called quarks. The picture is completed by a neutral particle with no structure: the neutrino. These four particles are needed to build the ordinary material world surrounding us. Besides these, there are less ordinary forms of matter which exist, but cannot be seen: cosmic radiation coming from space, the high-energy matter which we create in our laboratories, and the 'reflection' of all of these, the anti-matter. The lecture presents the characteristics of these particles, as well as those responsible for the interaction between them.

The lecture is an introduction to the most important issues of cosmology, a discipline studying the origins and history of the development of the Universe. How far is the farthest galaxy (and what is beyond it)? How was the Universe born? When was the big bang (and what was before it)? How does the entirety of the Universe move (and what makes it move)? What is the future of the Universe? These are basic questions of immense interest and to which we are getting increasingly accurate answers. The lecture describes the methods used to answer these questions and the theoretical background. The lecture leaves no doubt that thanks to increasingly more precise measurements and with the dynamics of theoretical thinking affecting measurement strategies cosmology will become a leading natural science discipline in the 21st century.
