A 20. század, s elsősorban annak második fele igen jelentős fejlődést tudott felmutatni az emlődaganat kezelésében. Az előadás bemutatja, hogy milyen utat járt be az emlőbetegségek - elsősorban a rosszindulatú daganatok - kezelése, hol tartunk jelenleg, mit tudunk tenni embertársaink egészségének visszaadásáért, életének biztosításáért. Megismertet az emlődaganatok keletkezésének és kórismézésének néhány kérdésével, különösen tekintettel a remélhetőleg mindinkább elterjedő szűrővizsgálatokra.
The lecture presents how the treatment of breast diseases, primarily malignant tumours, developed, where we stand now and what physicians can do to ensure the survival of sufferers. The introduction clarifies the notion of tumour and the difference between malignant and non-malignant tumours, then goes on to describe the diagnostic and treatment possibilities of breast tumours. Perhaps the most important message of the lecture is that self-examination, regular medical checks and mammograms play a vital role in early diagnosis. In essence there are three treatment options for breast tumours: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Nowadays, less radical surgical interventions than surgery are preferred, considerably decreasing the burden breast cancer puts on patients, without lessening therapeutic effectiveness. This of course, requires a better understanding of the biological behavior of tumours and the development of radio- and pharmacotherapy.
Korunk tipikus hídtervezője egyre kevésbé az inkább statikai számításokkal bajlódó építőmérnök; a feladat egyre inkább építészt, művészi tehetséggel is megáldott tervezőt kíván. Sőt manapság mintha a másik irányba mozdulna ki azt inga - az esztétikai szempont eluralkodása olykor öncélú, műszakilag indokolatlan és pazarló megoldásokra csábít.
Ever since Mankind began building it has been constructing bridges. The state of development of a civilisation is characterised by the technical, technological and aesthetic qualities of its bridges, from the simplest beam, frame, and suspension bridges to the most advanced oblique cable types. A few Japanese examples of the most advanced steel rope-structure bridges reflect the technological level of the country. The typical bridge designer of today is less of an engineer than his predecessors, indeed, nowadays designing a bridge is a multidisciplinary team task, dominated by a decorative designer and architect. The dominance of the aesthetic aspect may sometimes encourage autotelic and spendthrift solutions. Next, the lecture overviews the aspects and factors to be considered in the construction of a new bridge. Function, location, environment and tradition are all important factors - Japanese examples illustrate how all of these factors are taken into account. The main difficulty of the most advanced oblique cable bridges lies in the longitudinal distribution of the suspension ropes and the shaping of the pylons. This type holds more options from an aesthetic point of view, yet remains a simpler structure. While with suspension bridges we suspend the beam on the cable with a slender spider web, in the case of arch-bridges it is suspended on the main supporting arch, which is plastically hard to design in a pleasing way. A small bridge can also be recognised as a masterpiece: Mamuro Kawaguchi's foot-bridge has duly been awarded. Finally, the lecture deals with the events leading to and the implementation of the reconstruction of the Mária-Valéria Bridge at Párkány, which connects Slovakia and Hungary. Not merely were there complex technical elements but political and economic factors competing with historical traditions, moreover the exceptional location of the bridge - the proximity of the Basilica of Esztergom had to be borne in mind.

Continually we face risks in almost all aspects of our lives. Our own activities and the activities of society as a whole are incessantly about negotiating the attainable benefits and possible risks attached to them. The lecture is about complex systems, their operation, the role of banks and their risks. We call a system complex when it is complicated, lacks any kind of symmetry, depends on countless details and is sensitive to initial conditions making its future unforeseeable. Problematic areas of the financial world can be viewed as such complex systems and the mathematical methods developed to manage complex systems can be applied to them too. Following the introduction of the activities carried out by banks, the main types of risks which arise are presented, including market risks, lending risks, operational and system risks. A quantitative description of risk is also given. We learn the most frequently used risk measurement tools and their deficiencies. It is characteristic of deficiencies that great losses happen much more often in reality than could be expected based on traditional theory, this calls for the thorough revision of financial theory. Then some tools are presented which enable the moderation or elimination of financial risks. The limited protection of small investors, the maintenance of stability and the creation of equal-competition conditions made the establishment of international financial regulations necessary. The lecture mentions a few of the widely debated problems which have arisen in relation to the new international financial regulations under development.
