The exploitation of mineral substances and rocks is almost as old as conscious human activity. While satisfying basic human needs, mining also has economic, social and sometimes political importance. The lecture describes the history of mining and follows its development up to modern times with particular attention paid to mineral mining in the Carpathian Basin and the current mineral resources of Hungary. An important part of the lecture presents trends in worldwide mineral extraction. The political changes of recent decades, the opening up of the world economy and distribution have greatly changed the production scale of mining products. Some countries have maintained their traditional market position, however, Western European countries which previously played a decisive role have lost out as a result of this process while developing countries outside Europe have profited. The lecture raises the current issues related to finding a desirable balance between mining and the protection and restoration of the environment, with special regard to the greenhouse effect and its relation to fuel consumption.
The origins of the development of money date back to ancient Mesopotamia, and the first moneychangers, the ancestors of banks, appeared in Greece in the 5th century BC. The development of money, banking, shareholding companies and inflation form an essential organic part of the history of social development. The behavior of financial markets bears similarities to the functioning of that complex organ, the human brain. It is not by accident that research into gambling, which shows a lot in common with the short-term movement of financial markets, has lead to the establishment of modern decision theory. Combined with evidence from cognitive psychology this has led to the area known as 'financial theories of behavioral psychology'. Because there are things, which even decision theory and the related branches of science cannot explain completely, we also draw on the natural sciences and philosophy as well as intuition to understand the nature of finance.

A sejtek természetes elhalásának leggyakoribb formáját a tudományos köznyelv találóan apoptózisnak nevezi (a görög szó falevelek hullását jelenti).
The death of cells appears to be an undesirable process, however, cell death can also occur naturally through apoptosis. Apoptosis is an essential feature of how cells function, and it plays an indispensable role during the development and life of the organism. Natural cell death provides the basis for such everyday processes as the continuous renewal of the skin. Apoptosis is a newly understood phenomenon, it was first described in the seventies; the genetic description of apoptosis was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2002. The life or death of a cell is defined by its environment, signals leading to apoptosis arrive continuously from the environment as well as from within the cells. These will lead to actual cell death only if it is confirmed for the cell that the soundness of the organism cannot be safeguarded otherwise. The balance of natural cell death may fall both ways. Excessive cell death will lead to atrophy, such as the atrophy of the central nervous system in old age, or as in AIDS. A defect in the mechanism of apoptosis will lead to an unlimited proliferation of the given cell, a malignant tumour.
